There are 41 counties in all,here we give a brief description... There are 41 counties in Romania. They range from being very mountainous,to being very flat,with little or no hills or such for a great distance. The more beautiful regions,are covered with forests,mountains,lakes,rivers and wildlife and fauna,and can be said to be very similar to parts of Italy or France.

In alphabetical order,with a brief description are;

Alba County. This county has a population of just over 400,000 people and is made up of a terrain that is almost 60% mountainous. There are four main rivers,the Mureş river,and its discourses; the Târnava, Sebeş and Arieş. The county has 4 municipalities; Alba Iulia,Aiud,Blaj and Sebeş. There are seven towns; Abrud, Baia de Arieş, Câmpeni, Cugir, Ocna Mureş, Teiuş and Zlatna.

Arad County. This county has a population of over 500,000 people, and is again mountainous but to a lesser extent,as it has flatter terrain going towards the Western Romanian Plain.Both theMureş River and the Crişul Alb River cross the county. Though larger than Alba,the county has only one municipal. That of Arad. It does however have eight towns; Chişineu-Criş, Curtici, Ineu, Lipova, Nădlac, Pancota, Pecica,and Sebiş.

Argeş County. This county has a population of over 700,000 people,and the terrain here is once again mountainous,receading into more level lands in the south,where there one comes across the northern part of the Romanian Plain. Here there is the Argeş River,which takes its water from all the nearby mountains. There are three municipalities; Piteşti, Câmpulung, and Curtea de Argeş. There are then merely four towns; Mioveni. Costeşti, Topoloveni, and Ştefăneşti.

Bacău County. This county has a population of over 700,000 people,and the terrain is once again mountainous,being intercepted along the west side by the eastern Carpathians. Here there are the valleys where the rivers Oituz and Trotuş lie. To the east,the land declines and here the Siret river can be found in a valley. The county has three municipalities; Bacău, Oneşti, and Moineşti. There are five towns here,and they are; Comăneşti, Buhuşi, Dărmăneşti, Târgu Ocna, and Slănic Moldova.

Bihor County. This county has a population of over 600,000 people,and the terrain is again mountainous,shallowing towards the Western Romanian Plain. Here the rivers are; Crişul Repede, Crişul Negru and Barcău. The county has four municipalities; Oradea, Beiuş, Marghita, and Salonta. There are six towns; Aleşd, Nucet, Săcueni, Ştei, Valea lui Mihai, Vaşcău.

Bistriţa-Năsăud County. This county has a population of over 350,000 people,and the terrain is one third mountainous,while the rest of the land is represented by the Transylvanian Plateau,and therfore much flatter.It is crossed by the Someşul Mare River, and the Bistriţa River. The county has one municipality; Bistriţa. And three towns; Beclean, Năsăud, Sângeorz-Băi.

Botoşani County. This county has a population of over 500,000 people,and the terrain is much flatter here and is hence agriculturaly used. The rivers are the Siret River, the Prut River and its discourse, the Jijia River. The county has two municipalities; Botoşani and Dorohoi. It also has only two towns; Darabani and Săveni.

Braşov County. This county has a population of over 700,000 people,and the terrain is yet again very mountainous,with some flat lands used for a long period for industrial purposes. The main river here is the Olt River. This county is well known for tourism also. It has four municipalities; Braşov, Făgăraş, Codlea, and Săcele. And six towns; Ghimbav, Predeal, Râşnov, Rupea, Victoria, and Zărneşti.

Brăila County. This county has a population of well over 400,000 people,and the terrain is all level or plain land,and is used for growing. The Siret River and the Buzău River are the two main rivers that cross it. It has one municipality; Brăila,and three towns; Ianca, Însurăţei, and Făurei.

Buzău County. This county has a population of over 500,000 people,and the terrain is mountainous,but also has plain lands in the east. The principal river is the Buzău River,and this is prone to floods. The county has two municipalities; Buzău, and Râmnicu Sărat. It also has three towns; Nehoiu, Pogoanele, and Pătîrgele.

Caraş-Severin County. This county has a population of over 750,000 people,and the terrain is mountainous,though leveling down to hills and then plains land. The Danube River Romania in the county.The rivers Timiş, Cerna, Caraş and Nera also cross the county. The county was a mining area,and was part of the Habsburg monarchy's property. The county has two municipalities; Reşiţa, and Caransebeş. It also has six towns; Anina, Băile Herculane, Bocşa, Moldova Nouă, Oraviţa, and Oţelu Roşu.

Călăraşi County. This county has a population of over 350,000 people,and the terrain is plains land. The Danube crosses the county,and the rivers Argeş and Dâmboviţa do also. The county has two municipalities; Călăraşi, and Olteniţa. It also contains three towns; Budeşti, Fundulea, and Lehliu-Gară.

Cluj County.This county has a population of over 750,000 people,and the terrain is one third mountainous,while the rest is plains land or hilly. The rivers are the Someşul Mic, Arieş and Crişul Repede. The county is a trade and commerce region. The count has five municipalities; Cluj-Napoca, Turda, Dej, Câmpia Turzii, and Gherla. There is merely one town; Huedin.

Constanţa County.This county has a population of over 800,000 people,and the terrain is very level,as it reaches the black sea here. The Danube crosses in the east,and the pool known as lake Sinoe is here. The county is an agricultural area. The county has three municipalities; Constanţa, Mangalia, Medgidia. It then has eight towns; Basarabi, Cernavodă, Eforie, Hârşova, Năvodari, Negru Vodă, Ovidiu, and Techirghiol.

Covasna County.This county has a population of over 250,000 people,and the terrain here is once again mountainous,with valleys throughout. The main river here is the Olt River. It has two municipalities; Sfântu Gheorghe and Târgu Secuiesc. And three towns; Covasna, Baraolt, and Întorsura Buzăului.

Dâmboviţa County.This county has a population of over 600,000 people,and the terrain in this county is mountainous,but in the south it has some plains area and lower hills. The rivers here are the Dâmboviţa River, the Ialomiţa River and In the South the Argeş River. The county has two municipalities; Târgovişte and Moreni. Then there are four towns in all; Găeşti, Pucioasa, Titu, and Fieni.

Dolj County.This county has a population of over 800,000 people,and the terrain here can be found to be entirely flat. The Danube crosses it, which is in itself crossed in the middle by the Jiu River.It has three municipalities; Craiova, Băileşti and Calafat.And then,four towns; Bechet, Dăbuleni, Filiaşi, and Segarcea.

Galaţi County. This county has a population of over 650,000 people,and the terrain here is flat and level,lying on a plain. There are two rivers of note in the county,the first being the Prut River,and the second being the Siret River. There are two municipalities; Galaţi and Tecuci. There are also just two towns; Târgu Bujor and Bereşti.

Giurgiu County. This county has a population of over 300,000 people,and the terrain is once again located on the Romanian Plain, and hence,level. The Danube crosses it,as do the rivers Argeş and Dâmboviţa. There is one municipalty; Giurgiu. And three towns; Bolintin-Vale, Mihăileşti and Dealu.

Gorj County. This county has a population of over 400,000 people,and the terrain here is three quarters mountainous,and one quarter plains. The main river here is the Jiu River. The county has two municipalities; Târgu Jiu and Motru. There are then six towns; Rovinari, Bumbeşti-Jiu, Târgu Cărbuneşti, Novaci, Ţicleni, and Tismana.

Harghita County. This county has a population of over 350,000 people,and the terrain here is a very mountainous county,being of volcanic origins. Two of the most important rivers spawn from here,the Mureş and the Olt. There are two municipalities; Miercurea Ciuc and Odorheiu Secuiesc. And,seven towns therein; Băile Tuşnad, Bălan, Borsec, Cristuru Secuiesc, Gheorgheni, Topliţa, and Vlăhiţa.

Hunedoara County. This county has a population of over 500,000 people,and the terrain is mountainous. The Mures River crosses the county, with its diversions being the Strei, Rau Mare and Cerna and in the north also the Crişul Alb river. There are seven municipalities; Deva, Hunedoara, Brad, Lupeni, Orăştie, Petroşani and Vulcan. There are then seven towns also; Aninoasa, Călan, Geoagiu, Haţeg, Petrila, Simeria and Uricani.

Ialomiţa County. This county has a population of over 300,000 people,and the terrain here is on plains land. There are two rivers crossing the county, the Danube and the Ialomiţa. There are three municipalities; Slobozia, Feteşti, and Urziceni. There are four towns here; Amara, Căzăneşti, Fierbinţi-Târg and Ţăndărei.

Iaşi County. This county has a population of over 900,000 people, and the terrain here is plains land. The Jijia River is the main river that crosses the county. There are two municipalities; Iaşi, and Paşcani. There are three towns; Târgu Frumos, Hârlău and Podu Iloaiei.

Ilfov County. This county has a population of over 300,000 people,and the terrain is plains land,being very close to Bucuresti city. The main rivers here are the Dâmboviţa River, Colentina River and Gruiu River. There are eight towns here; Otopeni,where the airport is located for Bucuresti arrivals/departings, Voluntari, Buftea, Chitila, Pantelimon, Bragadiru, Popeşti-Leordeni and Măgurele.

Maramureş County. This county has a population of over 550,000 people,and the terrain is once again mountainous here,though going into lower lying hills and even some plains areas too. The main river is the Tisa River its diversions are the Iza, Viseu, and Mara. There are two municipalities; Baia Mare, and Sighetu Marmaţiei. There are five towns; Baia Sprie, Borşa, Cavnic, Seini, Târgu Lăpuş and Vişeu de Sus.

Mehedinţi County. This county has a population of over 325,000 people,and its terrain is a mixture,of mountains and plain lands. The Danube crosses this county,and so do the rivers Motru and Cerna. There are two municipalities; Drobeta-Turnu Severin and Orşova. There are then three towns in all; Strehaia, Vânju Mare, and Baia de Aramă.

Mureş County. This county has a population of over 600,000 people,and the terrain here is mountainous only in the north,while the rest is plains land. Th e principal river is the Mures, while there are two diversions from it the Târnava Mare and the Târnava Mică. There are five municipalities here; Târgu Mureş, Sighişoara, Reghin, and Târnăveni. Then there are seven towns; Iernut, Luduş, Sovata, Miercurea Nirajului, Sărmaşu, Sângeorgiu de Padure and Ungheni.

Neamţ County. This county has a population of over 600,000 people,and the terrain here is mountainous throughout,decreasing in some areas to the east from the west. The main river is the Bicaz. There are two municipalities; Piatra Neamţ, and Roman. There are then three towns; Bicaz, Roznov, and Târgu Neamţ.

Olt County. This county has a population of over 500,000 people,and the terrain here is flat, part of the Romanian Plain, and has rivers crossing it in many parts. The main ones being the Olt,and also the Danube in the south. There are two municipalities; Slatina, and Caracal. There are then six towns; Balş, Corabia, Drăgăneşti, Piatra Olt, Potcoava and Scorniceşti.

Prahova County. This county has a population of over 900,000 people and is Romania's largest county. The terrain is half flat,and half mountainous. The main river is the Prahova River,and it has some diverts,two of which are the Doftana River, and the Teleajen River. There are two municipalities; Ploieşti, and Câmpina. There are no less than twelve towns; Azuga, Băicoi, Boldeşti-Scăeni, Breaza, Buşteni, Comarnic, Mizil, Plopeni, Sinaia, Slănic, Urlaţi, and Vălenii de Munte.

Satu Mare County. This county has a population of over 400,000 people,and the terrain here is mountainous,and hilly,for about forty perecent of the land,then it converts over to be level plains land. The rivers which cross this country are the Someş River, Tur River and Crasna River. There are two municipalities; Satu Mare and Carei. There are also two towns; Negreşti-Oaş, and Tăşnad.

Sălaj County. This county has a population of over 275,000 people,and the terrain here is mountainous. The county is crossed by the Someş River. while some of the smaller rivers are the Crasna, Barcău, Almaş, Agrij and Sălaj. There is one municipality; Zalău. There are then three towns; Cehu Silvaniei, Jibou and Şimleu Silvaniei.

Sibiu County. This county has a population of over 450,000 people,and the terrain here is mountainous,with some of the highest mountains in Romania. There are three rivers; The Olt River in the South, with Cibin, its main diversion, and the Târnava River. There are two municipalities; Sibiu and Mediaş. There are then nine towns; Agnita, Avrig, Cisnădie, Copşa Mică, Dumbrăveni, Miercurea Sibiului, Ocna Sibiului, Sălişte, and Tălmaciu.

Teleorman County. This county has a population of over 470,000 people and the terrain here is flat lying, and level,as part of the Romanian Plain is here too. The main river is the Olt River which flows into the Danube,which also crosses the county. Other important rivers are the Vedea River, the Teleorman River and the Călmăţui River. There are three municipalities; Alexandria, Roşiori de Vede and Turnu Măgurele. There are then only two towns; Zimnicea, and Videle.

Timiş County. This county has a population of around 700,000 people,and the terrain is mainly mountainous,but then decreases into hills and then plains. The rivers here of the most importance are the Bega River and the Timiş River. There are two municipalities; Timişoara and Lugoj. There are then eight towns; Sânnicolau Mare, Jimbolia, Recaş, Buziaş, Făget, Deta, Gătaia, and Ciacova.

Tulcea County. This county has a population of over 300,000 people, and the terrain is a mixture of mountains and plains land. The county is full of lakes and rivers, the Danube being the main one crossing it. There is one municipality; Tulcea. And four towns; Babadag, Isaccea, Măcin and Sulina.

Vaslui County. This county has a population of around 500,000 people,and the terrain here is plains land,with the mains rivers being the Prut River and the Bârlad River. There are three municipalities; Vaslui, Bârlad and Huşi. There is just one town; Negreşti.

Vâlcea County. This county has a population of over 450,000 people,and the terrain here is mountainous throughout,though decreasing into plains land in the south. The main river here is the Olt River crossing the county from North to South, while its main diversions are the Lotru River and the Olteţ River. There are two municipalities; Râmnicu Vâlcea and Drăgăşani. Then there are eight towns ; Băbeni, Bălceşti, Băile Govora, Băile Olăneşti, Brezoi, Călimăneşti-Căciulata, Horezu, and Ocnele Mari.

Vrancea County. This county has a population of over 400,000 people,and the terrain here is mountainous,decreasing in height to the east,down to plains levels. The main river is the Putna river. There are two municipalities; Focşani and Adjud. There are three towns; Mărăşeşti, Odobeşti and Panciu.
